Chris knelt beside Adam and stretched out his stick. “Help me here, Alex, and we’ll tug him to shore.”

I grabbed the staff, as well, and Adam latched on to the other end. Together we pulled Adam over to hard ground and onto the path. He flopped like a limp fish onto solid earth and lay there, breathing hard and covered in muck.

Chris took up his staff and caught both our eyes. “Stay close to me and we’ll get everyone else out.”

Chris headed for Mary next. The frantic woman flailed her arms in our direction, futilely trying to reach us. Her efforts only made her sink further into the brown tar pit.

She noticed her worsening predicament and squirmed harder to free herself. “Help!”

Adam glared at her. “Hold still, you idiot!”

His command fell on deaf and frightened ears. “Help me! I’m sinking!”

Chris found the edge of the path behind her, and I found we were only twenty feet from the edge and those three paths. There was no time for that, though, because Mary wasn’t giving us any time. She was up to her neck and sinking fast. Chris tossed me his staff and threw himself onto his stomach to catch one of her flailing hands. Like a drowning man, Mary clamped both hands around his and nearly pulled him in with her. His body slowly sank into the soft muck.

I shoved the sticks into Adam’s arms and threw myself on top of Chris. He gave a soft ‘oomph’ on my landing, and I sheepishly smiled at him as he looked over his shoulder at me. “It worked, didn’t it?”

“It worked,” he confirmed as he returned his attention to the frantic woman. “Hold still and let us pull you in.”

“Get me out of here!” Mary wailed as her face became a smeared mess of tears and mud.

“Hold still!” Chris commanded her. His sharp voice cut through some of her panic, and she at least stopped her writhing.

I looked over my shoulder at Adam. “Put the sticks on the ground and help me pull on Chris’ legs.”

He did as I told him and together we took a leg. We pulled Chris backward, and in doing so dragged Mary out of the muck. Adam and I fell onto our rears as the mucked pair landed in our laps, Mary in Adam’s and Chris in mine.

I smiled down at my ‘catch.’ “I think I’ll keep this one.”

He grinned. “Never was a fish so glad to be reeled in.”

Mary sat up and shoved her palms against Adam’s chest. “Why the fuck did you take so long?”

He glared back at her before he jumped to his feet, dropping her onto the mucky ground. “Waste your time whining if you want, I’ve got a contest to win.” He turned away and strode toward the path.

My eyes widened. “Where are you going? We’re not done yet!”

Adam didn’t look back as he waved at us over his shoulder. “Good luck with that.” He disappeared down the middle path.”

Mary scrambled to her feet and balled her hands into fists.
